We teach to sign #16 Family

Get to know the signs related to the family. Joanna Huczyńska explains. To get the most benefit from this material, check out the video above. Automatic English translation. Found a bug? Inform us.

Hi. We see a tree here. Do you know what this tree is? Yes, it is a family tree. But the word “genealogy” there is no sign language equivalent, so the word must be replaced or spelled. I signed “family”, “generations”. You can also explain the meaning further. Let’s get started.

Family related sign signs

Who is this? I. Who is next? My sister. Sister. Is it “just” a sister? Not. We are twins. Twins. Who is next to us? My brother. Brother. He is younger. The three of us are siblings. Siblings. We have a mother. Mom. And next to it is Dad. Dad. They both have siblings too. What do we call them? Auntie. Who is next? Uncle. They also have children. We call them “cousins”. Cousin. My parents they also have parents. We will show: grandma and grandfather. Grandpa. And we are grandchildren to them. Grandson, granddaughter. You decide how you sign.

“Sister”, “siblings”, “brother” in Polish sign language

I will now explain how to distinguish the characters for “sister”, “sibling”, “brother”. They are easy to confuse. Some people show the sign “girl, woman” and then “siblings” showing the sign “sister”; and the same sign “brother” – “boy, man” + “siblings”. And the “sibling” sign remains unchanged. But on a daily basis at the beginning we will not sign “woman” or “man”. We understand what the mouth movement is all about and the difference in the characters shown.

But it is also possible to understand without noticeably moving the lips – by signing in a different way. For example, if I am talking about someone, at the beginning I can sign “sister” with the sign “woman”, and then, for the sake of simplicity, only sign “sister”. The sign of “brother” or “sibling” is clear. Most people blink without adding “female”, “male”. Only at once “sister”, “brother”, “siblings”.

Exercises

Now I will give you an exercise (see the clip in the video from 4:25). Try to understand who it is and the spelled name of that person. Try to practice your name and that of your family members.

Triplets in sign language

I have a question: are there triplets in your family? They are in mine! My sister and her husband, that is my brother-in-law, have recently had children – three beautiful children! Triplets! Each of them is different, unique. Triplets are rare, and they just happened here.

But… I haven’t shown you any more signs related to the family tree. Now I will show them slowly.
